One decision at a time

We live our lives in this very moment by making decisions about everything. In these moments we create our reality and future. 10 seconds at a time.

Making decisions about big, life - altering moves can be overwhelming and it doesn’t happen too often when we really have to make those decisions. We think, those decisions are going to shape our future significantly but the truth hides somewhere else.

The secret lies in the little, sometimes insignificant and totally innocent decisions that we make all the time.

Do you get up when you hear the alarm goes off or hit the snooze button for another 10 minutes sleep?

Do you dress up nicely in clothes that you feel good in or just put something on without thinking?

Do you have a nourishing breakfast or eat some leftover pizza from 2 days ago?

Do you open social media right away after you woke up or give yourself a quiet 30 minutes before the insanity of the outside world kicks in?

Do you have a work you like or just do something you hate just because bills need to be paid?

Are you surrounded with people who love and care about you – and vice versa - or your friends are actually frenemies and you hang out with them because it’s convenient or out of habit?

Do you decide binge watching your show or do you go for a walk?

Do you respect and love yourself enough by saying no to certain things or you are afraid to say no?

Do you read books that influence you to become better at something that interests you or you are done studying for good?

I can continue with the examples for a long time. You got the point.

Every day we make hundreds of decisions.

At the moment it doesn’t seem to be a big deal. How could watching TV or going for a walk affect your future?

If it happens only once in a while that’s fine. Everyone likes to watch a good show. If this is the decision you always make and you do it ALL the time for 10 years, 20 years then it is different. It becomes your future.

There is a very good book about this by Darren Hardy. It is called the Compound Effect.

In this book he compares 3 men who have slightly different daily habits about work, relationship, exercise and studying.

In the first year the difference between their success and happiness are insignificant. As time goes the gap between them goes wider and wider.

Not making decisions are actually decisions too, after all.

My mom, who lives in Hungary, is a good example for that. She is living alone after my dad passed away and a relatively big house and huge garden. As she is over 70 keep up with all the gardening and maintaining the house became a burden in recent years. Whenever I ask her what she wants to do when she complains how hard it is for her, she refuses to even hear about any changes. She made up her mind that she is not going to change anything because she will not move. She made a decision, most likely from fear because she was born into this house and never ever moved to another place in her entire life.

What can you do to change your habits and make better decisions?

Here are 3 ideas you can implement to your daily routine:

1. Be aware. Observe your daily habits without judging yourself. The point is to empower and not beating yourself up! What do you do on a daily basis? Did you create these habits or they just happened somehow to you? What kind of decision you make? Are you on autopilot or there is variety in your days?

2. Evaluate. Are those habits good for you? Are the decisions you make daily creating a joyful and effortless, mostly happy life for you? Which decisions are taking you closer to your desired life style and which decisions are not?

3. Make a different decision. Once you evaluated your daily routine and the decisions you make and you know for sure what is not working for you it’s time to make a change. How? Simply you make a different decision. If you want to eat healthier for example, you make a decision one snack at a time and one meal at a time. You don’t have to worry about the next 10 years of meals right now you just take care and make a different decision about the next one.

It is really that simple. We just overcomplicate our lives most of the time thinking it is more difficult than actually is.

There is this famous saying from Albert Einstein: Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.”

Make a decision today that you will be aware of your decisions. It’s your life after all, and it counts. You can change, do and achieve anything. By one decision at the time.
